Foreword
In their 2009 European election campaign, the Greens outlined a solution to the triple economic, social and environmental crises facing Europe: a Green New Deal for Europe.
The message clearly resonated with European voters, with the Greens/EFA group having major success in the election.Despite the reduction in size of the European Parliament (from 785 to 736 members), the Greens/EFA group managed to increase its size (from 43 to 55 members), the only political group to do so.
Now numbering 59 members - 31 female and 28 male from diverse backgrounds, Greens/EFA is the fourth largest political group in the European Parliament. The group includes members of Green movements, representatives of stateless nations and independents.
The group is committed to pushing for measures to deliver the Green New Deal during the legislative term from 2009-14. Action is required across the full spectrum of European policy and law-making to achieve an ambitious commitment to climate protection and a radical transformation of the economy to deliver millions of green jobs.
