A SHORT HISTORY OF THE GREENS IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

1984 For the first time, Greens are elected to the European parliament. 7 MEPs from Germany, 2 from Belgium and 2 from the Netherlands. Together with non-Green MEPs from Italy, Denmark, and regionalists from Flanders and Ireland, they form the Rainbow group.

1989 Breakthrough in the European elections for the Greens throughout the European Community. Greens from France, Italy and Portugal join the Germans, Belgian and Dutch MEPs. They form the first green group counting 30 Members. The British Greens achieve a record result of 14,9 % but stay without any seat due to the British «first past the post» electoral system.
